A failure to fulfill a duty or promise or to discharge an obligation or the failure or omission to perform an act.

For instance, if the borrower on a mortgage loan doesn't make his payments, he's in default. Or if the seller fails to make a repair or renovation to the property that was promised in the contract, then he is in default.
